Project Management: An Essential Core Competency for Human Resources
Presented by: Kathi Kroop, SPHR, HRPM
Cathy Vilaga, HRPM
Fusion
In today’s workplace, delivering on projects is a critical organizational capability and extends beyond the IT department and project office to include finance, marketing and even HR department. Why should human resource (HR) professionals be concerned with project management? First, the ability to manage projects successfully is a key skill identified by HRCI and SHRM that is critical in preparing HR professionals to effectively lead organizations through corporate and cultural challenges that change brings.
“A Project is a series of tasks and activities that has a stated goal and objectives, a schedule with defined start and end dates, and a budget that sets limits on the project’s dedicated used of resources – both monetary resources and human resources” (SHRM Learning Systems, 2008).
The second reason is that project management is about change – and HR must be effective change leaders within their organization if they want to be known as a strong strategic partner. In fact, this is one area where HR can deliberately rise above the compliance and tactical perception and become an innovative, strategic player in the organization.
Benefits of Project Management Skills for the HR Professional:
• Enhances HR’s ability to meet deadlines and deliver on their promises which increases their credibility within operations.
• Infuses HR with a strategic alignment between HR initiatives and organizational strategy, mission and vision.
• Utilizes a full array of cross functional templates that provide an integrated methodology that can be used by all organizational functions.
• Demonstrates evidence that HR can integrate project planning with demonstrated results that can be measured against stated objectives, project deliverables and deadlines.
• Solidifies formal metrics and reporting methodology for the C-suite and various stakeholders.
